Writing he noted, you may have seen these pictures before. Now, let me tell you why they mean so much to me.

For someone who came from a poor and penniless background where my parents couldn’t give me the greatest of education, I have come to appreciate that everyone—especially kids and teenagers at every age and stage—deserve the educational tools and skills that set them up for success in building the future they want for themselves.

That belief comes from the fact that a lot of us in the big cities often overlook education and its influence on a child’s ability to think critically. But it’s simply a fact that the more a child experiences from the education they get and the books they read, the wider their scope of the world. That is why it is important we ensure that each child has the opportunity to engage in enriching educational and social experiences. We need to help students, especially in villages and hinterlands, to travel outside the narrow confines of their surroundings and their daily experiences to get a taste of the world beyond.

That is why the McDan D/A Primary School in Teong is my little contribution to this ambition. We all need to understand that quality education is a transformative right for all people in our country and we all have a role to play in it. Wherever you find yourself, please make sure that you’re playing your part in ensuring that we provide our children with enriching experiences that change the way they experience school and help them create a vision of life outside of poverty.
