President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, cut sod for the construction and equipping of a 12 storey 400 bed Maternity and Gynecological Centre, and a 2-Storey 101 bed Urology and Phrenology Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Speaking at the ceremony ,President Akufo-Addo said the commencement of work on these projects will reduce maternal mortality rates in the country.He further explained that he made a promise to construct a new block and today’s ceremony is a fulfillment of that promise.

“I was struck by the poor state of the maternal block. I promised to help rescue the situation as the current state of the building is not fit for any purpose.Today’s ceremony is a fulfillment of the pledge I made. Once completed, the facility will contribute to addressing the persistent challenges of high maternal and child-heath morbidity and mortality in in Ghana,” he said.

The President was confident that the construction of these facilities at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital will put Korle Bu “in a strong position to give meaning to medical tourism services to neighbouring countries and also increasing its revenue base to expand services.
